Trasimeno Hills Wine Route
Between the regions of Umbria and Tuscany in the Lake Trasimeno area and wine valley lay 5 different roads.
Five classic itineraries form along these very roads, where you may taste some of Italy's most prestigious vintages: Sangiovese, Canajolo, Trebbiano, Grechetto, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Gamay.
Along these same routes traveled the ancient Romans, Etruscans, Carthaginians, lake fisherman as wells medieval monks -even St. Francis himself - as well a Medieval and Renaissance artists.
The first of our itineraries, the so-called "Hannibal's Camps", runs along Tuoro, site of the famous bloody battle between the fierce Carthaginian general, Hannibal, his elephants infantry and several Roman phalanxes. Today it is still possible to visit the primary points where this historic clash occurred. Our route also passes through Passignano -the Pearl of the Trasimeno" lake region -thanks to its great natural beauty and popularity among tourists.
Our second itinerary, "In the tracks of the Knights of Malta", snakes through Magione, which takes its name after a castle owned by the ancient equestrian order in the 15th century, and Corciano -a perfectly maintained medieval borgo still fortified by a 15th century constructed wall.
"The land of Perugino" is the name of our third itinerary. This route runs through the charming medieval city, Città della Pieve, and birthplace of the famous 14th century master painter, Pietro Vannuci ("il Perugino'). This road passes along the panoramic hilltop town of Paciano situated above Lake Trasimeno. Paciano, considered by many to be the ideal Italian town, is a perfect fortified gated circle with three main squares at its center. Then there is the town of Piegaro, another medieval castle and stronghold overlooking the Nestore Valley below. This town is famous for its glassworks, an industry in operation since 1292
Our fourth route, "Marchesato di Acanto della Corgna", runs through Castiglione del Lago, a small medieval walled borgo located on a promontory projecting out onto the lake. This small town still has 3-perfectly preserved gates through which its citizens still leave and enter regularly. Castiglione del Lago is surrounded by a beautiful boardwalk that runs the entire length of the promontory. The boardwalk leads visitors to relax on sandy banks, green lawns and under pine trees.
Finally our fifth itinerary, "The Green Valley of Memories among Castles and Abbeys", leads you beyond the region of Lake Trasimeno to the upper Tiber River valley, where ancient Castles and villages, churches and abbeys suddenly appear among thick woods and gently rolling hills.
