Castelli Romani Wine Route

The Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) hill region south of Rome derives its name from the fact that each of the towns boasts at least one grand noble residence.
Even if, as history records, most of them have been destroyed, the area's current palatial estates and ruins pay testimony to its wealthy past, where the region served as "Beverly Hills" to Renaissance and ancient Roman families who took refuge here amid mild summer climates.
The hills' highest peaks (775-950 mt) are pine, chestnut and oak tree summits perched atop ancient volcanoes. While extinct millions of years ago, these volcanoes provide spectacular views of Rome below and their craters filled with natural lakes and lava-rich soil -used to grow grapes and other agricultural products in abundance.

The Castelli Romani wine route is known for seven major wine growing areas: "Colli Albani", "Colli Lanuvini", "Frascati", "Marino", "Montecompatri", "Velletri" and "Zagarolo".
